Maison de Victor Hugo, Paris: Hours, Address, Maison de Victor Hugo Reviews: 4/5
From the day I moved into my apartment, exhausted and a mess after unpacking all day, I stumbled to first chair I saw, only then fully realizing what a mess I was, especially compared to dinner time people in the cafe and around Place Victor Four of us walked into this restaurant for brunch. We sat outside and ordered coffee and omelettes. Big mistake. The coffee was good and the Omelettes were delicious. The bill arrived 16 Euro First off, food was medium, at best.
Our server was a disaster from start to finish. We asked to sit outside right at the outset and he outright refused to seat us out there. He came back to our table a few mins Had an evening meal with 3 family members - enjoyable even though portions small and pricy.
What made this a forgetable experience was a very aggressive waiter - to begin with - hard selling expensive menu options. My wife and I decided to trust the Very bad service - waited around 20 mn for waiter to notice us - when i called him he said he will be there in a minute - he didnt show up - we ended up leaving! Good coffee, but the woman behind the bar was very rude when I asked if I could have my bill. Sorry if asked the wrong person.
I was polite, she however was not. Good food, suop a l oignon and tartare de bouef recommended. Beatiful view on Place Victor Hugo. Service can be improved, add a second waiter when busy.
Hugo is considered to be one of the greatest and best-known French writers. Hugo was at the forefront of the Romantic literary movement with his play Cromwell and drama Hernani. He produced more than 4, drawings in his lifetime, and campaigned for social causes such as the abolition of capital punishment.
Though a committed royalist when he was young, Hugo's views changed as the decades passed, and he became a passionate supporter of republicanism ; his work touches upon most of the political and social issues and the artistic trends of his time. His legacy has been honoured in many ways, including his portrait being placed on French currency. Hugo's childhood was a period of national political turmoil.
Napoleon was proclaimed Emperor of the French two years after Hugo's birth, and the Bourbon Monarchy was restored before his 13th birthday. The opposing political and religious views of Hugo's parents reflected the forces that would battle for supremacy in France throughout his life: Hugo's father was a high-ranking officer in Napoleon's army until he failed in Spain one of the reasons why his name is not present on the Arc de Triomphe.
Because Hugo's father was an officer, the family moved frequently and Hugo learned much from these travels. On a childhood family trip to Naples , Hugo saw the vast Alpine passes and the snowy peaks, the magnificently blue Mediterranean, and Rome during its festivities. They stayed in Naples for a few months and then headed back to Paris. Thereafter she dominated Hugo's education and upbringing.
As a result, Hugo's early work in poetry and fiction reflect her passionate devotion to both king and faith. It was only later, during the events leading up to France's Revolution , that he began to rebel against his Catholic Royalist education and instead acted as a champion to Republicanism and Freethought. On 4 September, she drowned in the Seine at Villequier , pulled down by her heavy skirts when a boat overturned.
